An investigation of ‘Sponsorship’ among female university students in Nairobi


'Sugar dating', ‘Sponsorship’ (in Kenya), ‘Mentorship’ (in Nigeria) or ‘Blessings’ (in South Africa) all refer to the same concept: intergenerational, transactional, sexual relationships.

The type of sponsorship we explored in our study was that of older men giving younger women gifts or money in exchange for sex. Though we recognize other forms of sponsorship exist of a different gender composition, we were curious to first and foremost understand the prevalence of and attitudes towards sponsorship of young women in Kenya.
